EV Charging Station Subsidy in India
India is rapidly expanding its electric vehicle charging infrastructure across cities, highways, expressways, petrol pumps, commercial properties, parking areas, hotels, hospitals, industries and other public and semi-public locations. There are two broad categories of Government support relevant to EV charging projects.
1. Central Government Support
The major current central programme is PM E-DRIVE, under which public EV charging infrastructure has a dedicated financial-support component.
2. State Government EV Policies
Individual states and Union Territories have their own EV policies, which may provide incentives relating to:
- EV charging infrastructure, capital investment
- Electricity tariffs, land, stamp duty
- Electricity connection, renewable-energy integration
- Manufacturing, services, battery swapping, EV adoption
A project should be evaluated under both the applicable Central Government framework and the relevant State Government policy, not one or the other.

PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement
PM E-DRIVE is a Government of India scheme administered by the Ministry of Heavy Industries. The framework includes a dedicated allocation for EV Public Charging Stations (EVPCS), officially listed at ₹2,000 crore.
The Government has subsequently extended the overall PM E-DRIVE scheme timeline to 31 March 2028, with amendments and updated notifications continuing to be issued in 2026.

A Common Misconception
Is PM E-DRIVE Subsidy Available Directly to Private EV Charging Station Owners?
Not automatically. This is an important distinction. PM E-DRIVE charging-infrastructure funding is implemented through eligible Government or nodal entities and the prescribed implementation mechanism. A private company can establish and operate an EV charging station, but that does not mean every privately funded charging station automatically receives PM E-DRIVE financial assistance.
