EV Charging Business Opportunities Along NH16

NH16, previously known as NH5, is one of India's original Golden Quadrilateral highways, running roughly 1,711 km along the east coast through Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal. It is one continuous economic corridor, but it is not standing still: Odisha has plans for a six-lane elevated corridor on the Bhubaneswar-Puri stretch and is six-laning the Chandikhole-Jagatpur-Bhubaneswar section, while the Andhra Pradesh stretch around Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam is getting new flyovers and grade separators to ease city traffic.

There is even a Maharashtra angle. The under-construction Surat-Chennai Expressway, which starts near Nashik and runs through Solapur, Kalaburagi and Kurnool, is designed to meet Chennai, the same southern end as NH16. Once complete, it will link Maharashtra traffic straight into this corridor.

  • 1,711 km, one of India's original Golden Quadrilateral highways
  • Odisha's Bhubaneswar-Puri and Chandikhole-Bhubaneswar stretches are being upgraded
  • A future Maharashtra link is coming via the under-construction Surat-Chennai Expressway

Add EV charging without changing your core business
Solar integration where the site allows it
BESS backup for a corridor that already carries heavy freight and pilgrim traffic

The real opportunity

You Are Not Just Selling Electricity

Think about a family heading to Puri for the Jagannath Temple, one of India's most visited pilgrimage sites, or stopping in Bhubaneswar along the way. They are not just passing through, they are planning to stay. If your property offers a charging point along with food, a place to sit or a room to rest, you have given them a reason to choose your stop over the next one.

That is the actual business: EV charging plus food, rest, shopping and parking, packaged as one stop, not an isolated charger standing alone in a parking lot.

  • Tea and coffee counters near the charging bay
  • Food and dining while the vehicle charges
  • Hotel stay, shopping or a proper rest break

What You Can Realistically Expect

A 60 kW DC fast charger running at good utilization can add up to meaningful monthly revenue, but the real number on your property depends on traffic at your exact spot, your charging price, electricity cost, demand charges and nearby competition.

We are not going to quote you a fixed monthly income figure without seeing your site. What MSEB Power can do is walk your property, look at the numbers with you, and give you an honest read on whether it makes sense before you invest.

Why Demand on This Highway Will Keep Growing

NH16 is one continuous corridor, but different stretches are being upgraded on their own timelines. Odisha is planning a six-lane elevated highway between Bhubaneswar and Puri, one of the country's most visited pilgrimage destinations, alongside six-laning work near Bhubaneswar itself. Further south, the Andhra Pradesh stretch around Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam is getting new flyovers and grade separators.

For a closer look at that Andhra Pradesh stretch specifically, including its own six-laning project and port-linked growth, see our dedicated Vijayawada-Visakhapatnam highway page. More electric vehicles are entering fleets across this whole corridor every year, and a property that plans for charging infrastructure now is well placed to serve that demand as it grows.

Chennai-Kolkata EV Charging Questions

  • Can I set up an EV charging station on my property on this route?
Yes. Hotels, dhabas, petrol pumps and commercial properties along NH16 between Chennai and Kolkata can add EV charging as an additional service. MSEB Power evaluates your site and recommends the right charger setup for your traffic and available power.
  • How much does an EV charging station cost on this highway?
Cost depends on the charger type, capacity, and how much electrical upgrade your site needs. A basic AC charging point costs less than a high-power DC fast charger built for highway traffic. Share your location and property type with our team for a site-specific quote.
  • Which stretches on this highway are best for EV charging stations?
Natural halt points such as Kharagpur, Balasore, Bhubaneswar, Berhampur, Rajahmundry and Nellore see steady industrial, pilgrim or highway traffic, which makes them strong locations to evaluate for an EV charging station.
  • Is NH16 being upgraded?
Yes, in sections. Odisha is getting a six-lane elevated corridor plan on the Bhubaneswar-Puri stretch and six-laning work on the Chandikhole-Jagatpur-Bhubaneswar section, while the Andhra Pradesh stretch around Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam is getting new flyovers and grade separators. Together these point to rising investment along the full corridor.
  • Does this highway connect to Maharashtra?
Not directly today, but the under-construction Surat-Chennai Expressway, which starts near Nashik and runs through Solapur, Kalaburagi and Kurnool, is designed to meet Chennai, the same southern end as NH16. Once complete, it will link Maharashtra traffic into this corridor.
  • Can solar and battery storage (BESS) be added to a highway EV charging station?
Yes, where the site is suitable. Solar can offset part of your daytime charging load, and BESS can store that power for use during peak hours or grid outages. Our team evaluates whether solar and BESS make sense for your specific site before recommending them.
